    Why visit Kutná Hora?

Kutná Hora developed around its rich medieval silver deposits and became one of the important royal towns of the Kingdom of Bohemia. Its prosperity financed extraordinary architecture that survives today.

The historic centre of Kutná Hora, St Barbara's Cathedral and the Cathedral of Our Lady at Sedlec form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. UNESCO highlights the town's importance as a medieval silver-mining city and the architectural significance of its monuments for the development of Central European architecture.

Sedlec Ossuary – the famous Bone Church

The Sedlec Ossuary is located beneath the Cemetery Church of All Saints. The history of the site is closely connected with the medieval Sedlec monastery and cemetery. Over centuries, the remains of people buried in the large cemetery were transferred into the lower chapel.

Architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel is associated with the Baroque concept of the ossuary, while the most recognisable elements of today's decoration were created by František Rint in the nineteenth century. They include the remarkable bone chandelier, garlands and the Schwarzenberg coat of arms.

    More than a “Bone Church”

Internationally the ossuary is often searched for as Sedlec Ossuary, Kutná Hora Bone Church or simply Bone Church. Yet the place itself deserves to be described with respect.

The ossuary remains a sacred space and a place of final rest for human remains. Its central idea comes from the Christian memento mori – remember death. For this reason, photography inside the lower chapel is prohibited; the official operator emphasises that it is a memorial and spiritual space, not merely a photographic attraction.

    Sedlec Cathedral

Just a few minutes from the ossuary stands another important monument – the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist. Its history is closely linked with the Cistercian monastery at Sedlec and with the founding of Kutná Hora.

After later damage it underwent an exceptional Baroque-Gothic reconstruction in the early eighteenth century, in which Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel took part. The cathedral, together with the historic centre of Kutná Hora and St Barbara's Cathedral, forms part of the UNESCO inscription.

    St Barbara's Cathedral

After Sedlec, your driver takes you into central Kutná Hora. The city's landmark is St Barbara's Cathedral, one of the most significant late-Gothic buildings in Central Europe.

Dedicated to St Barbara, patron saint of miners, the cathedral reflects the city's close connection with silver mining. Its interior recalls the town's former wealth. Allow enough time for the interior and a walk around the church; opening hours change with the season.

    Explore the UNESCO Old Town

From St Barbara's Cathedral, walk through the historic centre: pass the Jesuit College, continue along Barborská Street and discover narrow medieval lanes, burgher houses, churches and reminders of the town's mining wealth. Depending on time you can visit:

    • St Barbara's Cathedral
    • the Jesuit College
    • the Italian Court
    • the Stone Fountain
    • the Church of St James
    • the Czech Museum of Silver
    • the historic centre
    • town viewpoints

You don't have to see everything. The advantage of a private trip is that you decide whether to spend more time on monuments, history, lunch or simply strolling through town.
